'Striped Predator'
Difficult to mistake for any other British fish, this stripy predator will attack almost anything small enough when young. Those that live to grow large become for more cautious.

Maximum Length: 20 inches
Life Span: 13 years
Perch Characteristics:
The Perch is a handsome fish, with striking looks well suited to its predatory life. Its flanks are olive green with six or seven black stripes, camouflaging it among weed and reeds.

Where to find Perch:
Perch are found almost anywhere. River systems through to still waters such as lakes and gravel pits.

Feeding Habits:
The Perch is a predator which will generally hide in reeds and rushes to ambush smaller fish and other creatures as they come within striking distance. Although, at certain times of the year, Perch will group to feed on fry and minnows.

Perch Baits:
An excellent bait for Perch is Large Lobworms. These account for the majority of big Perch caught in the United Kingdom. Livebaits work equally well. Gudgeon are regarded as the best livebait for Perch fishing. Shiny baits such as roach, dace and bleak are very popular Perch baits.
In recent years deadbaits have become a recognised Perch technique, and many big fish have fallen to deadbaits fished on ledger tackle.

Authors preferred baits:
Maggots, used as a bunch or single or redworm can catch decent perch. A small fry on the hook as a deadbait can also be deadly.
