Local Frome

January 13th 2010

Decided to have a stroll down to the nearby Frome along the bypass towards Stonehouse. I made my way to a pool where two weirs send the river along seperate paths with the intention of using up some leftover maggots to catch whatever was biting.

Settling at the head of the larger pool I started by trotting maggots before switching to the feeder later in the session. Casting into the nearside eddy I soon had a sharp rattle of the tip and a spirited little trout, very silver with neat black spots, was on its way to the net.

The light was starting to fade and without a torch to help once it went completely, I forged my way back through the brambles and headed home.

January 16th 2010

A mild sunny day encouraged me to stroll along the Frome again. I still had some maggots and bread to use up and as I planned to fish for a few hours instead of just the one as before, I had a small tub of worms with me as well.
Starting in the same swim I struggled for bites so moved into the smaller pool behind. Plopping a tiny feeder stuffed with maggots and liquidised bread to the edge of the flow I was soon getting lightning-fast taps on the tip. I failed to connect with these and with time marching on I moved to a small pool on the main river a few dozen yards downstream.

The feeder went in again with a juicy worm on the hook. The rod soon bucked in my hand as a plump brown trout charged off with the bait. It tried darting into a fierce looking nearside snag but was soon netted. This fish of about 12oz was heavily marked with large black spots that contrasted boldly againts the butter-yellow belly. I lowered it back in the net and he bolted strongly into the depths. Several further savage bites were missed but two smaller trout were to grace the net before being returned themselves.
