Stroudwater Canal
Matt's Catch
Sunday, 16th September
Had a few hours fishing the top end of the canal. Matt was getting regular bites from small perch on worm, but it was a while before the bream arrived. Double or single red maggot accounted for some unmissable bites from these, and he landed three pristine fish before it was too dark to pack up, the best being about 3lb 8oz. Including all the perch, it was probably a double figure bag. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday afternoon!
Sunday, 23rd September
Tried the canal again, this time fishing the peg downstream of Matt. The water has cleared alot in the past week, and occasional clumps of weed were drifting by. I put one rod out on the bite alarm with a stack of corn as bait and quivertipped with the other rod with half a worm tipped with maggot on a size 20 hook. The weather was very changeable, starting warm but drizzly. After a short while a good rattle on the tip resulted in a nice bream of 3lb3oz. This looked promising, but the wind picked up, rain began in earnest, and we had to rapidly get the brollies up. With the intermittent downpours, the temperature dropped and we struggled for bites. After a small perch on the float Matt struck his feeder rod into a good fish on double maggot, and shortly landed another bream of around 3lb. Despite a small eel I had a little later, this was all the action were were to have. A disappointing day in comparison to last week, but the conditions were very different, and very unsettled.
